Please save September 21, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a free reception and talk by Dr. Lani Leary at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Center (JAHC). Dr. Leary has more than 25 years of experience working with
chronically ill, dying, and bereaved clients. She served as the director of mental health services at Whitman Walker AIDS clinic, as a professor of Death Studies at George Mason University, and as a researcher at the National Cancer Institute of NIH. She also garners wisdom from her personal experience—her mother's death when she was a child, her father's death from cancer, her own profound near-death experience—and has sat with over 500 people as they died. She is the author of the book, No One Has To Die Alone.
Listen to Dr. Leary's TEDx talk based on her book "No One Has to Die Alone."
2025 Events
The Foundation For End Of Life Care, hosted Ira Byock, M.D. in Juneau in December, 2025. Dr. Byock is a leading palliative care physician and public advocate for improving care through the end of life. He provided a special presentation to medical staff at Bartlett Regional Hospital and spoke to almost 200 Juneau residents on Dec. 10, 2025 at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center. His topic was "What Mortality Can Teach Us About Living Fully."
The Foundation offered our publication "When You're Not Here" to all who attended and provided important paperwork for people to consider filling out as part of their end-of-life planning. Dr, Byock's books were sold also at the event by Hearthside Books. In addition, Hospice volunteers provided additional free information about hospice services.
Here are a few photos from the events.
Check out this great interview on KT00 "A Juneau Afternoon" with Bruce Weyrauch and Dr. Ira Byock starting at 19:40.
